Not only was I an educator from 2003 to 2015 (PreK-8th grade) but I loved going above and beyond the classroom to teach young people. Whether it was adding Spanish to the curriculum, teaching interpretive moves to teach chants that would help students remember important facts, or creating a leadership program to assist with personal issues that were impacting classroom performance, I wanted children to go further than their eyes could see. In order to to do this, I had to reach the parents, teachers, and administrators. Watch the clip below as I empowered the faculty and staff at Crittenden Middle School.

In 2008 I created G.I.R.L.S. with P.E.A.R.L.S. is a leadership program tailored for all female students who desire to enhance their emotional, social, and academic growth and development while completing their last transition year to middle school, high school, or college.

This program commenced in 2008-2009 school year while I was employed at Benjamin Syms Middle School in Hampton, VA. I was inspired by watching young eighth grade girls interact in school. Some girls were confident, leaders, vibrant, studious, and social. Others were angry, bullied, inappropriate, mislead, irresponsible, unaccountable, had low self esteems, and were lonely.

I noticed that some of these barriers affected the classroom environment. This sparked something in me and I wanted young girls to be able to do well in all areas of their life and be able to coexist in school with girls who were different from each other. These areas of concern, in turn, became the curriculum. In addition, I wrote the acronym, creed, and created an emblem which symbolizes the concepts of this program.

Another great organization that I love to work with is Six Mount Zion Baptist Temple’s Teen Leadership Academy. I have been working there six years as co-director with Mr. Carlton Ashby. We teach the students so many facets of leadership from inspirational people like John Maxwell and Steven Covey. We introduce them to various community leaders such as Congressman Bobby Scott, Governor Terry McCaulife, Delegate Jeion Ward of the General Assembly, Newport News Commonwealth Attorney, the Mayor of Newport News, philanthropists, doctors, lawyers, chefs, visionaries, and many more successful people. We take the students on college tours and trips to enhance their culture such as museums. The best part about this summer job is that I get to see the students beyond the six weeks we spend together. Through our special events and fundraisers, we bring students back to give us testimonies of how they applied the leadership curriculum. Contact me if you are interested in your rising sixth grader or twelfth grader participating in the Teen Leadership Program.

In June 2016, I became one of the speakers for Still I Rise, another program that teaches leadership skills and empowers the youth. it’s an honor to be a part of a team of successful men and women who inspire youth to embrace their own path to success.
